letter from Steve to the committee about group role

Letters from Steve to the committee

(1) Role of ‘Support’ Group

We have an active and enthusiastic group who are prepared to promote the image of the Choir in a proactive way, both at concerts and at promotional events. I’ve used the terms ‘promote’ and ‘promotional’. These are verbs that the group feel best describe their role and hence we have rebadged ourselves as the ‘Promotion Group’. It is increasingly obvious that this group can (and want to!) play a significant part in the Choir but their role needs to be understood by the committee to prevent clashes with committee roles and responsibilities.

As a basis for discussion I have set out below the activities that the group are prepared to undertake during this year. This is wide ranging and suggests that a closer relationship with the committee might be needed.

  • 1. Merchandising – the original role of this group – selling CD’s, books, pens, etc.
  • 2. Publicity
  • Originally general Choir information leaflets but now sees an opportunity to actively promote concerts, particularly the October Town Hall concert. This impacts on the role of the committee publicity officer so needs to be clearly understood and defined.
  • Support and help our members to sell tickets. The perennial problem. How do some members sell (apparently easily!) lots of tickets whilst 30% of the membership don’t sell any! A little presentation on ‘how to sell’ might help.
  • Circulation of Concert Publicity to external groups. Something we try to do but all a bit ad-hoc. A group with this as a focus might do it better.
  • Via the stall, the group is in a position to build a mailing list of people and organisations that might be potential ticket buyers.
  • Liase with Huddersfield University Business School. Can we be a ‘Project’? Meeting arranged with Barbara Butler at HU to explore this further.
  • Promotional Events. Holmfirth Craft Market, Kingsgate Centre. Can we do a short sing, particularly at Kingsgate, to promote October concert.
  • 3. Friends
  • Do we want ‘Corporate’ Friends? Businesses that support the Choir via nominal sponsorship in exchange for web links and recognition in our concert publicity.
  • Continue to grow Friends list

Current Group Membership

  • Dave Walker
  • Robert and Liz Coombs
  • Bill and Cathy Judd
  • Steve Flynn
  • Various others on an ad-hoc but very welcome basis.
