Welcome to John Middleton
Group Process
- General committee – JM felt the committee were kept up to date with the promotion group and as long as we didn’t produce any problems they would ‘let us get on with it’.
- Recruitment – several possible new members reported. Their contact details need passing on to the recruitment group (eg. Allan Jones from Honley suggested by RC – passed on to Bill H)
Selling
- Town Hall concert – We need to persuade Adam to be assertive in getting information out to the audience at half time about the stall DW. Liz would like floating sellers in the balcony and in the area as well as the stall – she will arrange LC.
- Penistone Paramount – can we have a stall – check with Denby Dale Rotary DW and ask ticket prices.
- Christ Church – raffle to revert to Geoff Gill and Ibbo (now a standard bit of the evening), but we will steward (I’ve emailed Richard G) .
- Low Moor as normal.

Marketing projects
- St Buryan – excellent social event. Reservations as to the value of flyer drop in terms of attendance, though we enjoyed the walk on a dry day and there was some personal contact as well with people on the streets. On the other hand New Mill Club couldn’t have held many more. Christ Church not a good venue. Should the price have been higher? Raffle format was good. It doesn’t feel an easy one to solve. We want to be loyal to the club, yet another singing venue might produce too large a number for the ‘afterglow’.
- Holmfirth stall – slow start, picking up once we introduced the chocolate cake in earnest. Smiles all round and no one objected to a chat or taking a leaflet and a beer mat. The layout of the stall was excellent, but most felt, despite best efforts, we did not have enough interest. We are gathering expertise in the product; we need to expose it to areas where there are more people (Holmfirth Square – DW to check with Graham Dawson/Parish Council; Huddersfield Town centre – BJ to check it out). Other possibles – Coop.
- Willard White – just a thought about flyers and posters. Is there a plan so everywhere is covered? Could we produce lists of places which would go together and then ask for volunteers and give them the list?
Future marketing projects
- University research – (1) awaiting students to sign up to research (2) Facebook – we need to arrange to go and see Sabrina and Nick Oct 10th to familiarise ourselves with the facebook proposal and to discuss purpose and content – see appendix (booked in for 10ish Fri 10th Oct DW, SF, JM)
- Email marketing – can we design and print small cards which collect email details. Cards can be put in a tin for a prize draw – DW to look in ‘email marketing for dummies’ for model. Can we generate a newsletter example DW.
- Videos – Kirklees college – keep contact going DW
- Penistone train. Not a goer.

(appendix Q&A between SF and DW
Q Purpose of digital marketing – communications
A INTERNAL
- Coaching current singers – harmony and performance
- digital communications generally are not consistent
- email announcements work well
- notices at rehearsal work well
- small improvements might follow tweaking email
EXTERNAL
- Audience – our current regular reliable numbers at concerts (relatives and friends) depends on the choir member we could help out with a digital database and keeping regular contact
- we could expand that to friends of friends.
- All of these contacts could carry on, if they want, with email information even if choir member left or died
- Community outreach – new audience, maybe younger as well
- new singers, maybe younger as well
- ?friends and volunteers
this is where social media will help
Q Content. What do we deliver to the audience? ‘The audience ‘ are the people using the site not the audience at a concert although, hopefully, they will start to become one and the same thing.
- A Yes needs to be thought about – my first thoughts were what do we want our social media followers to do – what action do we want them to take?
- to be impressed
- to be proud of a local asset
- to smile
- to want to be involved
- as an audience member
- as a friend
- as a singer
- to book the choir
- to want regular information – to read and to listen to news, music and conversation
Q Abdul should have some experience of this and be able to guide us but we need some ideas
as well.
A Yes we will be depending on him heavily to get going.
Q Feedback. We have to give ‘the audience’ the opportunity to feedback their thoughts. This might
be painful to read.
A yes)
