Just last week, a deaf deputy-head gave me a pathetic excuse for handing his work in late. ‘It’s all there on my desk, I just forgot to bring it’.
I wonder where he got that one from? David Hinchliffe is a truly gentle person who has few dark moments. His best pal was a local gp, a redoubtable scot called Gordon Selby, who couldn’t return to the place of his birth because his shoes had worn out. Gordon was a patient of mine who always asked how my health was, even as his was failing. Reminds me of another quiet Scot who I knew in his later years – Alec Fiddes, an RU migrant who came south to play for ‘Fartown’.
Clive Hetherington claims to be a labour supporter. He is also on the editorial board of the newsletter. One meeting in May he admitted to owning a laser printer and had recently bought a Nikon SLR digital camera to supplement his Fuji (both 6 megapix). Then it came out in conversation that he had iTunes on an Apple iPod. To arrange our next meet he popped out a pocket organiser – flashes of light, whistles, bells, the lot. Not your old-fahioned socialist then. More your Tony and Mandy.
From Camra’s web siteMay 2005. ‘The Star Inn at Lockwood has been voted Huddersfield Mild Pub of the Year 2005 by the Mild drinkers of Huddersfield and local CAMRA members. It previously won this coverted title in 2002 but has had to contend with being runner up for the last two years’. Nevertheless, it is a marvellous achievement and a worthy winner. Well done Sam.
The Star Inn will also be holding its annual Summer Beer Festival in early July and it promises to be the best yet. At a recent CAMRA meeting Sam told members that it was business as usual at The Star and this year’s programme of events would continue to provide Real Ale drinkers with the widest possible range of new and interesting beers.
‘In New Mill, The Duke of Leeds has Tetley Bitter, Taylor’s Landlord and Theakston XB as regular beers with guest ales. It is holding its first beer festival this month and is worth a visit. Across the way, the White Hart just has Tetley Bitter on handpull as does the New Mill WMC’.
